How many sheets of drywall do I need for a room?
Total the surface area first, then divide by the area of one sheet. A 4 ft × 8 ft panel is 32 ft² and a 4 ft × 12 ft panel is 48 ft², so the count is the area with waste divided by 32 or 48, rounded up to whole sheets. For a room, wall area is perimeter × ceiling height, and ceiling area is length × width. A 12 ft × 12 ft room with 8 ft walls gives a 48 ft perimeter, so walls are 384 ft², the ceiling adds 144 ft², and the combined total is 528 ft². The same arithmetic works for gypsum board, sheetrock, plasterboard, and wallboard, because the calculator only cares about panel dimensions.
Then decide what to subtract. Small windows and standard doors are usually left in the area because the offcuts rarely reassemble into usable pieces, and the default 10 percent allowance is meant to absorb them. Deduct only openings that occupy a full floor-to-ceiling bay, a large picture window wall, or a stair opening. Nominal panel width is 4 ft with standard lengths from 8 ft to 16 ft, and 54 in wide board is available in 1/2 in thickness for 9 ft walls [3]. Choosing a length that matches the wall reduces butt joints, which is the real driver of finishing labor.
Should I use 4x8 or 4x12 drywall sheets?
Longer panels mean fewer joints. On a 12 ft wall a single 4 × 12 sheet hung horizontally spans the whole run with no butt joint, while 4 × 8 sheets leave one butt joint per course. Gypsum Association guidance is to use boards of maximum practical length so the minimum number of end joints occur, and to keep joints at least 12 in away from the corners of window and door openings unless a control joint is placed there [3]. Butt joints are the hardest to hide because they sit on the flat rather than in a tapered recess, so cutting their number is worth real money at the finishing stage.
Weight is the counterargument. At the nominal 1.6 lb per ft² for 1/2 in regular board, a 4 × 8 sheet weighs about 51 lb and a 4 × 12 sheet about 77 lb [3]. Ceilings in particular are a two-person job with 12 ft panels, and 5/8 in Type X board of the same size is heavier still, commonly around 2.2 lb per ft². Access matters too: a 12 ft panel will not turn a tight stair. Many DIY jobs land on 4 × 8 for handling and 4 × 12 only on long, straight, ground-floor walls. The sheet count changes accordingly, since 48 ft² per panel covers 50 percent more than 32 ft².
How much drywall do I need for a 12x12 room?
Take a 12 ft × 12 ft room with 8 ft ceilings and hang walls plus ceiling. Perimeter is 2 × (12 + 12) = 48 ft, so wall area is 48 × 8 = 384 ft². The ceiling is 12 × 12 = 144 ft². Combined area is 528 ft². Apply the 10 percent default: 528 × 1.10 = 580.8 ft². Divide by 32 ft² for 4 × 8 panels and you get 18.15, so the named result is 19 sheets. In 4 × 12 panels the same 580.8 ft² divided by 48 is 12.1, so 13 sheets. Notice the rounding happens once, at the very end.
Now stress-test the assumptions. If the room has a full-height opening to a hallway, subtract that bay before applying waste. If the ceiling is vaulted or coffered, expect 15 percent rather than 10 because angled cuts generate scrap that cannot be reused. If part of the bathroom side will receive tile, the panel count does not change but the board type does, and the calculator does not choose product type. Finally, order in the pallet quantity your supplier sells; buying 19 sheets often means taking 20, and the spare is genuinely useful for patches during trim-out.
How much does a sheet of drywall weigh?
Weight scales directly with area and thickness. Nominal weights for standard gypsum board are about 1.1 lb per ft² at 1/4 in, 1.3 lb per ft² at 3/8 in, and 1.6 lb per ft² at 1/2 in [3]. That makes a 4 × 8 sheet roughly 35 lb in 1/4 in, 42 lb in 3/8 in, and 51 lb in 1/2 in, while a 4 × 12 sheet of 1/2 in board runs about 77 lb. Lightweight 1/2 in panels are sold at reduced weights, and 5/8 in Type X is heavier, commonly near 2.2 lb per ft², which puts a 4 × 12 sheet around 106 lb.
Weight has planning consequences beyond your back. A 500 ft² order of 1/2 in board is roughly 800 lb of material that has to be delivered, stacked flat, and supported along its full length so panels do not sag [3]. Ceiling assemblies have their own limits: gypsum board manufacturers publish maximum weights of overlaid unsupported insulation, such as 1.3 lb per ft² over 1/2 in regular board on framing at 24 in on center and 2.2 lb per ft² at 16 in on center [3]. The calculator counts panels; it does not check framing capacity, deflection, or fire-rated assembly requirements.
How much joint compound and tape do I need for drywall?
Compound and tape scale with linear feet of joint, not with sheet count, which is why this calculator deliberately stops at panels. A rough planning figure many estimators use is one gallon of ready-mix compound and about 40 to 50 linear feet of tape per 100 ft² of board for a standard three-coat, Level 4 finish. The number of joints depends on panel length, so the same room finished with 4 × 12 board needs measurably less tape than one finished with 4 × 8. Count your actual joints from the layout rather than trusting a rule of thumb on a complex ceiling.
The finish level drives the rest. GA-214 defines Level 4 as two separate coats of compound over flat joints, one over interior angles, and three coats over fastener heads and accessories, which suits smooth walls with flat paint, light texture, or wallcoverings [2]. Level 5 adds a skim coat of compound over the entire surface and is specified for non-flat or dark paints and critical lighting [2]. Level 5 can easily double compound consumption. Level 2 is enough where board is a tile substrate [2]. Decide the level before you buy compound, because it changes the quantity far more than the sheet count does.
How to measure
Calculate total square footage of surfaces to be drywalled. For rooms, sum all walls plus ceiling. Subtract large openings only if they occupy full floor-to-ceiling space.
