How do you calculate flooring square footage?
Multiply length by width for each rectangle and add the rectangles together. An L-shaped room splits into two rectangles; a bay window is a third. Measure at the widest point in each direction, ignore baseboard, and include the floor under a toe-kick or a door swing because flooring runs beneath both. Closets and stair treads are separate quantities and are easy to forget.
How much extra flooring should I buy for waste?
10% for a straight layout in a simple rectangular room, and 12 to 15% for a diagonal or wide-plank install. The real driver is the ratio of cut edges to field area, so a long narrow hallway wastes more per square foot than an open room of the same size. Herringbone and chevron patterns run higher still.

- Area = 168 ft². With 10% waste = 184.8 ft². If each carton covers 24 ft²: 184.8 ÷ 24 = 7.7 → 8 cartons.
How do you calculate how much flooring you need?
Measure length × width at floor level and multiply for square feet, or enter the area directly if you already have it from a plan. Break L-shaped rooms into rectangles, add the pieces, and include closets, alcoves, and the strip of floor under a swinging door. Then apply a waste allowance: order area = net area × (1 + waste%). Finally divide by the coverage printed on the carton and round up, because flooring is sold in whole boxes. A 12 × 14 ft bedroom is 168 ft²; at 10% waste that is 184.8 ft²; at 24 ft² per carton, 184.8 ÷ 24 = 7.7, so you buy 8 cartons.
The same three steps work for solid hardwood, engineered wood, laminate, luxury vinyl plank, and click-lock vinyl tile. What changes is the carton coverage and the waste you should plan. Never mix carton coverage between SKUs — a 7-inch-wide LVP box and a 5-inch oak box can differ by 10 ft² even within one brand. Measure the widest dimension of each wall rather than an average, and check for out-of-square rooms by comparing the two diagonals. If they differ by more than an inch, expect tapered cuts along one wall and plan waste at the higher end of the range.
How many boxes of laminate or vinyl plank flooring do I need?
Divide your order area by the square footage each carton covers, then round up to the next whole box. Cartons commonly cover between 18 and 30 ft², and the exact figure is printed on the label along with the plank count. For 500 ft² of net floor at 10% waste, order area is 550 ft²: that is 28 cartons at 20 ft² each, 23 cartons at 24 ft², or 19 cartons at 30 ft². The nine-box spread between the smallest and largest carton is exactly why you should never estimate box count from area alone without reading the label on the product you are actually buying.
Rounding up almost always leaves partial material, and that is useful. Keep one full spare carton when the budget allows: dye lots, gloss levels, and embossing shift between production runs, and product lines are discontinued regularly, so a plank pulled from storage matches better than a replacement bought later. Store it flat, indoors, in the same conditions as the installed floor. Confirm what is not in the box as well. Underlayment, moisture barrier, adhesive, transition strips, stair nose, and quarter round are separate line items, and a flooring calculator does not count any of them.
How much waste should you add for hardwood, laminate, and LVP?
Eight to ten percent covers a straight-lay floor running the long direction of one rectangular room. Move to 10–12% when the run crosses several rooms and a hallway, because each doorway forces a cut and the offcut is often too short to start the next row. Diagonal layouts at 45 degrees need 12–15%. Herringbone runs 15–18%, and true chevron, which requires mitered plank ends, can reach 20%. On a 500 ft² job those percentages mean ordering 540, 550, 560, 575, 590, or 600 ft² — a 60 ft² spread between the simplest and the most demanding layout, or roughly two extra cartons.
Waste is not only about pattern. Plank length matters: long boards produce longer, more reusable offcuts, while a short-plank product wastes more at every wall. Grade matters too, since character-grade and rustic hardwood ship with knots and defects the installer will cut out. Stairs are their own calculation — a tread, a riser, and a stair nose per step — and should be tallied separately rather than buried in a floor percentage. Underestimating waste costs a second delivery and a possible dye-lot mismatch; overestimating costs one box you keep for repairs. That asymmetry favors rounding up.
Do I need to acclimate flooring before installing it?
Follow the manufacturer's written instructions, because they control the warranty. Acclimation exists because wood and wood-based cores move with the moisture in the surrounding air. The National Wood Flooring Association publishes Installation Guidelines along with a Moisture & Wood technical publication and a jobsite checklist that cover site conditions, subfloor moisture testing, and expansion allowances for solid and engineered wood [1]. EPA guidance is a useful sanity check on the environment itself: indoor relative humidity should be kept below 60 percent, ideally between 30 and 50 percent [2]. A house sitting at 70% relative humidity during construction is not ready for a wood floor.
Practically, that means the HVAC system should be running at normal living conditions before delivery, the slab or subfloor should be tested rather than eyeballed, and expansion gaps at walls and around columns must be left open and covered by trim rather than filled. Click-lock laminate and rigid-core LVP move less than solid wood but still need perimeter gaps and, on long runs, transition profiles. None of this changes the square footage or carton count the calculator returns — it changes whether the floor you ordered stays flat, tight, and quiet after its first heating season.
How much flooring do I need for a 12 by 14 foot bedroom?
The room is 12 × 14 = 168 ft². A 2 × 5 ft closet adds 10 ft², so the net area is 178 ft², or 16.54 m². The layout is straight-lay luxury vinyl plank in one room with two doorways, so 10% waste is appropriate: 178 × 1.10 = 195.8 ft². The label states 24 ft² per carton, so 195.8 ÷ 24 = 8.16, which rounds to 9 cartons — 216 ft² delivered. That is 38 ft² more than the net floor, enough to cover the closet cuts, the two thresholds, and a spare row set aside for a future repair.
A larger open plan follows the same path. A great room measuring 20 × 16 ft plus a 10 × 12 ft dining extension is 320 + 120 = 440 ft². Subtract a 3 × 5 ft tiled hearth for 425 ft² net. The planks run diagonally, so use 12%: 425 × 1.12 = 476 ft². At 30 ft² per carton, 476 ÷ 30 = 15.87, so order 16 cartons, or 480 ft². Note that the diagonal allowance alone added 51 ft² — nearly two cartons — which is the whole reason to settle the layout direction before placing the order.

Measure the longest wall lengths at the floor level. For L-shaped rooms, break into rectangles and sum areas, or measure total area from a floor plan.
