How many bundles of shingles are in a square?

A roofing square is 100 ft² of finished roof surface, and for most asphalt shingle products three bundles cover one square — roughly 33.3 ft² per bundle. That is the ratio this calculator uses by default. Heavier designer, luxury, and some impact-rated profiles are packaged four or even five bundles per square, which lowers coverage to 25 ft² or 20 ft² per bundle. The coverage chart printed on the bundle wrapper is the only authoritative figure for the product you are buying, so read it before converting squares to bundles. Squares are the estimating unit; bundles are the purchasing unit, and confusing the two is the most common ordering error.

Bundles are counted from sloped roof area, never from the building footprint. A 2,000 ft² roof surface is 20 squares, which is 60 bundles at three per square or 80 bundles at four. Add the waste allowance to the roof area first, then divide by 100: 2,000 ft² plus 10% is 2,200 ft², or 22 squares and 66 bundles. Field shingles are only part of the order. Starter strip, hip and ridge cap, underlayment, ice barrier, drip edge, valley metal, pipe boots, and nails are all sold separately and estimated in linear feet, rolls, or pieces rather than squares.

What is the roof pitch multiplier and how do you use it?

The pitch multiplier converts the flat footprint you can measure from the ground into the sloped surface you actually shingle. It is pure geometry: multiplier = √(rise² + 12²) ÷ 12, where rise is the vertical inches per 12 inches of horizontal run. A 4/12 roof gives √160 ÷ 12 = 1.054, so the roof surface is 5.4% larger than the footprint. A 6/12 gives 1.118, an 8/12 gives 1.202, and a 12/12 gives exactly √2, or 1.414 — a 41% increase. Skipping this step is the single biggest source of short shingle orders on steeper roofs.

Apply it before anything else: roof area = footprint × multiplier. On a 1,200 ft² footprint, 4/12 yields 1,265 ft² while 12/12 yields 1,697 ft² — a difference of more than four squares from the same building. FEMA classifies sloped roofs as those with a pitch of 3 feet vertical to 12 feet horizontal (3:12) or greater [1]. Below that, asphalt shingles enter low-slope territory where manufacturer instructions and code require additional underlayment or a different roof covering entirely, so confirm the minimum slope for your product. Measure rise and run with a level and a tape, or use a pitch gauge.

How do you measure a roof from the ground?

Measure the building footprint at the eaves, outside edge to outside edge, including the overhang — that overhang is shingled, so leaving it out understates the order. Tape the length and width along the walls, then add the projection on each side. A 36 × 26 ft building with a 12-inch overhang all around is effectively 38 × 28 ft, or 1,064 ft² rather than 936 ft², an increase of about 1.3 squares before the pitch factor is even applied. Sketch the plan and label every rectangle, including porches, dormer roofs, garage wings, and bay projections that carry their own pitch.

For the pitch, hold a level horizontally against the rake board, measure 12 inches out along it, then measure straight down to the roof surface; that vertical distance in inches is the rise. Do this from a ladder or an upstairs window rather than walking the roof. Complex roofs with multiple planes and pitches are better handled section by section, or with an aerial measurement report. This calculator approximates a simple gable or hip from one rectangle and one pitch, so treat the output as a budgeting and ordering estimate — not a structural evaluation or a substitute for a contractor's take-off.

How much waste should you add for hips, valleys, and ridge?

Ten percent is a reasonable default for a straightforward gable roof with a couple of vent penetrations. Hip roofs cut every course at the hips and typically justify 12%, while a cut-up roof with several valleys, dormers, skylights, and a chimney can warrant 15–18%. On a 2,000 ft² roof surface those allowances translate to 21.0, 22.0, 22.4, 23.0, and 23.6 squares at 5%, 10%, 12%, 15%, and 18% — which at three bundles per square is 63, 66, 68, 69, and 71 bundles. Because bundles round up, one extra percentage point sometimes costs nothing and sometimes costs a full bundle.

Waste is added to the sloped roof area before dividing by 100, which is how this calculator handles it. Note what waste does not cover: starter course, a separate product run along eaves and rakes, and hip and ridge cap, sold by the linear foot. FEMA's mitigation guidance for sloped roofs recommends ring-shank nails for wood nailing, fasteners placed inside the manufacturer's nailing zone, and upgraded underlayment beneath shingles in high-wind regions [1]. How many bundles of shingles do I need for a 40 by 30 foot house at 4/12 pitch?

The footprint is 40 × 30 = 1,200 ft². The 4/12 pitch multiplier is √(4² + 12²) ÷ 12 = √160 ÷ 12 = 1.0541, so the roof surface is 1,200 × 1.0541 = 1,265 ft². That alone is 12.65 squares. This is a simple gable with two plumbing vents, so add 10%: 1,265 × 1.10 = 1,391 ft², or 13.91 squares. Round up to 14 squares. At three bundles per square, order 42 bundles of field shingles. Before waste the same roof is 13 squares and 39 bundles, so the allowance costs exactly three bundles.

A steeper example shows why pitch dominates. A 28 × 36 ft footprint is 1,008 ft². At 8/12 the multiplier is √208 ÷ 12 = 1.2019, giving 1,212 ft² of roof surface. This one is a hip roof with two dormers, so use 12%: 1,212 × 1.12 = 1,357 ft², or 13.57 squares, which is 40.7 bundles — order 41 bundles. The footprint is 16% smaller than the first example, yet the bundle count is nearly identical, entirely because of slope. Separately, measure ridge and hip lengths in linear feet for cap, and eaves and rakes for starter strip.
